This course has been designed for the purpose of meeting the requirements of PUBLIC ACT 88-7, which defies a juvenile police officer and mandates training requirements. The program will provide officers with the skills and techniques useful in handling problems, legal, social, and psychological encounters when dealing with the Juvenile Justice System.
This 32-hour course is divided into four (4) days. Each day will present four (4) units as listed below.
Unit 1. Statutory Certification Requirements- Overview
Unit 2. Juvenile Court Act of 1899- Overview
Unit 3. Role of the Juvenile Police Officer
Unit 4. Juvenile Law Implementation
Unit 5. Child Abuse and Neglect- Overview
Unit 6. Definition of Child Abuse (Criminal Code of 1961- Section 10-9)
Unit 7. Role of Illinois Department of Children and Family Services
Unit 8. Minor Requiring Authoritative Intervention (MRAI)- Overview
Unit 9. Theories of Child Abuse and Neglect
Unit 10. Human Brain Function and Development
Unit 11. Effects of Pre-Natal Drug Exposure
Unit 12. Adolescent Violence
Unit 13. Effects of the Adolescent Brain on Behavior
Unit 14. Mental Health Issues
Unit 15. Bullying- Overview
Unit 16. Issues of Special Populations
