There have been a number of high-profile law updates with-in Illinois as it relates to LGBTQ+ issues. From use of bathrooms, gender markers on driver’s licenses/state identifications, birth certificates and passports. Updates from having a male/female gender marker to having a non-binary designation or X. Standard agencies must comply under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), use of dead-names, pro-nouns, to hate crime reporting.
We (CDO Executives) offer training on de-escalation tactics, crime prevention, implicit/explicit biases, community partnership building, the logistics on arrests/searches/housing and best practices policies when handling calls within the LGBTQ+ community. While this topic is primarily a state’s right issue, there have been specific federal case laws that most officers are unaware of, and their agencies are open to a claim of deliberate indifference. There are also case laws on hiring practices and job discrimination issues related to the 1964 Civil Rights Act recently ruled on by the U.S. Supreme Court. Our goal is to provide the information needed to lead to better interaction while protecting the officers and agencies.
