
In the early 1980's people began to take notice of the appalling numbers of traffic deaths on the nations highways. From 1982 to 2000 an average of 42,000 died annually from traffic crashes. During this time alcohol related fatalities have steadily decreased from a high of 25,156 (53.3% of all fatalities) to a low of 15, 976 (38.3% of all fatalities). This reduction in the number of fatalities is due to the efforts of many different agencies and organizations. These figures are encouraging however in 2000 alcohol related deaths rose for the first time in five years to 16,653.
