WHAT MAKES DUI ENFORCEMENT SO IMPORTANT?

The answer is simple; DUI enforcement saves lives! Aggressive enforcement of the DUI laws reduces fatal traffic crashes, reduces the number of injuries and the amount of property damage. Aggressive traffic enforcement also reduces crime.

In the early 1980's people began to take notice of the appalling numbers of traffic deaths on the nations highways. From 1982 to 2000 an average of 42,000 died annually from traffic crashes. During this time alcohol related fatalities have steadily decreased from a high of 25,156 (53.3% of all fatalities) to a low of 15, 976 (38.3% of all fatalities). This reduction in the number of fatalities is due to the efforts of many different agencies and organizations. These figures are encouraging however in 2000 alcohol related deaths rose for the first time in five years to 16,653.

Motor vehicle crashes are the number one killer of teenagers and other young adults. Over 35 percent of motor vehicle fatalities of people 15 to 20 years of age are alcohol related.
