Director J.W. "Skip" Bennett retired on June 30, 1999. After almost twenty years of service he set a standard for training that was second to none. The ideology was simple. Find the training that would make police officers better at what they do and do everything you can to provide them with equality training.
Ronald Shownes the Assistant Director of SILEC was placed in charge as the Acting Director, pending the decision made by the search committee which consists of members from the SILEC Board of Directors and the ASSIST #14 Advisory Board.
Ron Shownes has 35 years in law enforcement, with the last 10 years spent executing training. He has made presentations on training at the local, state, and national level.
Ron is certified as a fingerprint expert and has served on the Board of Directors for the Missouri Division of the International Association of Identification. He was a member of the Major Case Squad for 16 years.
Ron has served on the Firearms Ad Hoc Training Committee for the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board since 1989. He also served on the Police Pursuit Study Committee and was a Chairperson for the Defensive Driving Committee for the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
Ron has numerous awards in Police Shooting Competition and is a member of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers.
