     Serves as Chairman of the ASSIST/MTU #14 Advisory Board. Chief Betten was elected to serve as Chairman by the Advisory Board in March 2007. He has been an active leader of law enforcement in Southwestern Illinois for the past 20 years. His leadership skills have helped MTU #14 fulfill its mission of providing quality in-service training to our membership agencies.

     Chief Betten has served as Police Chief since 2002 for the City of O'Fallon. Prior to his appointment in O'Fallon, Chief Betten served the Fairview Heights Police Department for 18 years. During his career in Fairview Heights, he served as a Lieutenant, an Investigator, Detective, Commander for the St. Louis Metropolitan Major Case Squad and Deputy Director for the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force. Chief Betten currently serves as an officer of the Southern Illinois Chiefs of Police.

     Chief John Betten received his Bachelor of Arts in Urban Affairs/Political Science from St. Louis University in 1981 and his Masters of Arts in Public Administration from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 1996. He is also a 1997 graduate of the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University Traffic Institute in Evanston, Illinois. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy graduating in 2006.
